Luc Tuymans

Luc Tuymans (b. 1958) is a Belgian artist and Professor of Art at The European Graduate School / EGS. His career spans painting, film, and video experimentation. He studied at the Sint-Lukasinstituut (Brussels), École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de la Cambre, and Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (Antwerp), later pursuing art history at Vrije Universiteit Brussels until 1986.

Notable achievements include representing Belgium at the 2001 Venice Biennale, exhibiting at major institutions like the Tate Gallery and MoMA, and curating exhibitions linking Belgian and Chinese art. He served as a guest tutor at the Rijksakademie van beeldende Kunsten, mentoring painters.

His work critiques socio-political themes through understated visual language. Key awards include Commander of the Order of Leopold (2007) and amfAR’s Artistic Excellence Award (2013).
