Clarke's research centers on documentary photography and collage, utilizing a personal photographic archive spanning from 1981 alongside family snapshots and souvenir ephemera. His core interests include tourism and the Heritage Industry, New Topographics movement, photomontage techniques, and the intersection of everyday visual culture with historical narratives. His creative practice manifests primarily through photobooks published by independent presses such as Café Royal Books, Fistful of Books, The Velvet Cell, and Out of Place Books.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent thematic focus on British seaside towns (Blackpool, Rhyl), Welsh locations (Newport, St Helens), and American urban landscapes (San Diego series), all examined through documentary photography lenses. These works collectively explore tourism's visual language, post-industrial landscapes, and vernacular architecture, demonstrating strong alignment with the New Topographics movement's ethos of examining ordinary environments with clinical precision.
Professional recognition includes:
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), 2023
Clarke has supervised undergraduate modules across art and design disciplines since 2018 at Chester, with prior teaching appointments at Mid Cheshire College, Liverpool John Moores University, and Manchester Metropolitan University.
