Mutlu's research focuses on photobooks as autonomous artistic mediums, heterotopias, and visual narrative structures. His 2020 thesis, "The Photobook as an Autonomous Medium and a Work of Art," established his expertise in visual storytelling and cultural theory.
His recent 2025 article, "Spaces of Contrast: Robert Frank's America Through a Heterotopic Lens," applies Foucauldian concepts to analyze documentary photography's role in reinterpreting spatial and cultural boundaries. This aligns with his broader interest in visual culture and heterotopic analysis.
As co-founder of the art book initiative KartonKitap (2014), he continues to explore interdisciplinary collaborations. His creative practice includes photography projects and image editing, with a pedagogical focus on visual communication design.
