Tora Holmberg has served as Vice-Chancellor at Umeå University since April 1, 2025. A distinguished academic, she is also a Professor in Sociology (2015–present) and Docent in Sociology (2009). Her work bridges cultural sociology, science and technology studies (STS), and interdisciplinary research on societal challenges.

Her research explores how people navigate everyday life through social, cultural, and technological frameworks. Key areas include medical sociology, animal-human relations, and sustainability studies, with over 40 peer-reviewed publications. She founded interdisciplinary groups like the Cultural Matters Group and Waste Values research initiative.
She has chaired the Swedish Sociological Association (2016–2018) and currently leads Kommittén för demokratins röstbärare (Committee for the Voice of Democracy, 2024–present). Her leadership spans Deputy Vice-Chancellor roles in Humanities/Social Sciences at Uppsala University (2020–2025) and Deputy Dean of its Faculty of Social Sciences (2017–2020).
Notable awards include the Katrin Fridjonsdottir Prize and Segerstedt Prize, both in 2007. She has secured major grants from the Swedish Research Council, Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, COST, Mistra, and Formas.
Her collaborations extend to artists and interdisciplinary teams, reflecting her interest in the intersection of science and cultural creation. She holds a registered nurse qualification (1994) and remains active in public discourse through opinion pieces and blogs.
