Tony Perez is an Associate Professor in the Department of STEM Education & Professional Studies at Old Dominion University (ODU), part of the Darden College of Education & Professional Studies. His research focuses on the intersection of motivation theory and STEM achievement, with emphasis on interventions to support underrepresented groups in STEM fields. Perez holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Temple University (2012) and an M.A. in Clinical-Counseling Psychology from La Salle University (2003).
His expertise spans motivation mechanisms, identity development in STEM, retention strategies, and applied statistical methodologies. He has secured over $7 million in grants, including federal funding for projects like 'Undergraduate Enrichment Experiences to Support Biomedical Careers' (2016–2020) and 'Bootstrapping Achievement and Motivation in STEM' (2014–2017). His work emphasizes practical interventions to improve STEM persistence through expectancy-value frameworks and stereotype threat mitigation.
Perez's publications address motivational profiles, diagram comprehension interventions, and the role of relevance writing in biology education. He has received awards including ODU's Darden College New Investigator Award (2017) and Shining Star Teaching Recognition (2015). His research bridges cognitive and motivational supports, demonstrating significant impacts on undergraduate STEM grades and retention through combined intervention approaches.
