Shana Pribesh is a Professor and Chair of the Department of STEM Education & Professional Studies at Old Dominion University (ODU), serving as Interim Dean of the Graduate School. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from The Ohio State University (2005) and has over three decades of experience in educational research, focusing on structural aspects of educational inequality, student/teacher racial dynamics, and residential/school mobility impacts. Dr. Pribesh has led numerous federal grants totaling millions, including studies on engineering education integration, STEM teacher preparation, and pair programming for students with disabilities.
Her research spans education policy, program evaluation, and causal methodologies, with notable work on school librarians' impacts on student achievement. She has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles, including studies on family structure effects on academic outcomes, cross-national comparisons of child well-being, and interventions for community college retention. Awards include the Jesse H. Shera Award for Distinguished Research (2012) and multiple ODU mentoring awards.
Key grants include a $1.06M NSF grant for engineering teacher preparation (2019–2023) and a $1M SSTEM initiative for cybersecurity student success. Her work emphasizes evidence-based practices, causal research design, and applied interventions to address educational disparities. Dr. Pribesh also leads ODU's Fusion Lab, exploring innovative research methodologies.
