Professor Tony Fretton is a prominent architect and academic at London Metropolitan University, where he serves as Master of Diploma Unit 2 in the School of Art, Architecture and Design. He is also a visiting professor at the University of East London and has held academic roles at institutions including the Technical University of Delft (1999-2013), Harvard Graduate School of Design, ETH Zurich, and others. His professional practice, Tony Fretton Architects and later Tony Fretton Studio, has designed notable projects such as the Fuglsang Kunstmuseum (Stirling Prize shortlisted) and the British Embassy in Warsaw. His teaching focuses on architectural design from concept to detailed realization, emphasizing real-world briefs and sites.
His research interests align with his practice, exploring architectural design methodologies, urban contexts, and cultural institutions. Publications include AEIOU (2018) and Buildings and their Territories (2014). He is a trustee of Docomomo London and his work is archived in institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum.
