Spike Sweeting is a Tutor on the V&A/RCA MA History of Design program at the Royal College of Art, where he is affiliated with the School of Arts & Humanities. Based at the Victoria and Albert Museum, he has held this position since 2013, currently preparing publications derived from his doctoral research.
Dr. Sweeting received his educational foundation with a BA in History from University College London (UCL), which he completed in 2005. After a brief period working in music PR and as a painter and decorator, he returned to academia to pursue an MA in History of Design through the V&A/RCA program. He later taught architectural history in UCL's History of Art Department before commencing his PhD at the University of Warwick in 2010.
His research centers on the Port of London during the eighteenth century, examining how markets were constructed both as physical entities and conceptual frameworks. His scholarly interests span multiple interconnected domains:
- Architectural history and theory
- Urban infrastructure development
- Historical and philosophical dimensions of trade
- Theories of modernization and economics
- Material cultures related to risk, corruption, and monetary systems
Dr. Sweeting currently supervises research students including Georgina Izzard, Laurence Wen-Yu Li, and Naiyi Wang. His position uniquely bridges the academic environment of the Royal College of Art and the museum context of the Victoria and Albert Museum, allowing for rich integration of theoretical and practical perspectives in design history.
