Dr Joshua Mardell is an architectural historian affiliated with the Royal College of Art’s School of Architecture. His research spans 19th- and 20th-century architectural history, focusing on queer studies, architectural conservation, and dynasticism. He advocates for historic preservation, notably in the Grade II-listed Darwin Building. Mardell is co-editor of the Journal of Architecture and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. His work includes the award-winning Queer Spaces: An Atlas of LGBTQIA+ Places & Stories (2022) and Victorian Architecture & Dynasticism (2025). He has held teaching roles at the University of York, Queen Mary University of London, ETH Zurich, and UCL’s Bartlett. Mardell’s research clusters include the RCA’s Sites & Situations, exploring territories and political contexts through art and architecture. He has organized conferences on queer space, architectural dynasties, and conservation advocacy. His exhibitions, such as the 2023 An Activist Scholar: The Gavin Stamp Archive, highlight activist-scholar legacies. He has presented globally, including at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Architectural Association, and Zaha Hadid Architects.
Notable honors include the 2023 Architectural Reference Book of the Year, Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects Award, and Brian Cohen Essay Prize (2018). Mardell’s interdisciplinary approach bridges archival research, public engagement, and critical theory, emphasizing marginalized voices in architectural history.
