Tony Fang is a Professor of Business Administration at Stockholm Business School (SBS) of Stockholm University, where he conducts research and teaches at undergraduate, graduate, and executive levels. He leads the Emerging Markets Cross-Cultural Research Group, which focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to emerging markets research.
Dr. Fang received his PhD and Licentiate of Economics in Industrial Marketing from Linköping University, Sweden (1999, 1997) and his Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China (1987, 1984). Prior to his academic career, he worked at Chinese and Scandinavian shipping companies, including as a seaman on cargo vessels traveling between China and Europe.
Fang's research centers on cross-cultural management, international business, and Chinese business culture, with a particular focus on his Yin Yang theory of culture. His work explores how paradoxical value orientations coexist within cultures and shape international business practices. He has published extensively on Chinese business negotiating styles, internationalization strategies, and the cultural dimensions of business in emerging markets.
His recent publications demonstrate a continued focus on international business in times of geopolitical tensions, with particular attention to Chinese firms' internationalization, sanctions, and the impact of the pandemic on global value chains. His research shows a consistent pattern of applying his Yin Yang framework to understand cultural paradoxes in business contexts across different regions and industries.
