Weigui Fang is a Distinguished Professor at the School of Chinese Language and Literature, Beijing Normal University (BNU), and holds the title of Yangtze River Scholar, China's highest academic honor. He serves as Chairman of the Academic Council of the Centre for Studies of Literary Theories and Director of the Centre for Literature and the History of Ideas at BNU. His academic career includes habilitation in Germany, a rare achievement for Chinese scholars. Fang’s research focuses on comparative literature, conceptual history, and Sinology, with over 140 scholarly articles and major monographs in Chinese, German, and English. He has organized influential international conferences fostering dialogue between Chinese and European scholars.
Education: BA from Shanghai International Studies University (1981), PhD in Comparative Literature from Technical University of Aachen (1992), and habilitation at Erlangen University (2002). Awards include State Council Special Allowances and the National Natural Science Award.
Research interests span modern Chinese literature and culture, sociology of literature, and conceptual history. His publications explore cultural concepts, transnational intellectual exchange, and comparative methodologies. Fang’s work bridges Eastern and Western scholarly traditions, making him a leading figure in humanities research.
