Tonio Andrade is a Professor of Chinese and Global History at Emory University, where he explores global connections in early modern history with a focus on China. He holds degrees from Reed College (B.A., 1992), University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (M.A., 1994), and Yale University (M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D., 1997–2000). His research examines military innovation, colonial interactions, and diplomatic relations between China and Europe. Notable books include *The Last Embassy* (2021), *The Gunpowder Age* (2016), *Lost Colony* (2011), and *How Taiwan Became Chinese* (2007).
Andrade’s work challenges Eurocentric narratives by emphasizing China’s military dynamism and global exchanges. He has taught courses such as 'China and the World' and 'Modern Chinese History.' Awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Society for Military History’s Distinguished Book Prize. He advises PhD students in Chinese history and early modern colonialism.
Currently, he is researching the Dutch East India Company’s impact on Asia. His affiliations include Emory’s Department of History, and he resides in Decatur, Georgia, with his family.
