Dr. Tonia Poteat is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Health Behavior and an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Medicine at the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health. She also serves as Core Faculty at the Center for Health Equity Research and a Faculty Fellow at the Carolina Population Center. Her work bridges clinical practice and community-engaged research, with over 20 years in healthcare and 10 years in academic research.
Dr. Poteat holds a PhD in International Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (2012), an MPH in Behavioral Science from Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health (2007), and a BA in Biology from Yale University (1991).
Her research focuses on improving LGBTQ health and HIV outcomes, particularly addressing intersectional stigma affecting transgender adults. She leads the RISE Lab, which examines structural interventions to reduce health inequities. Her clinical background complements her academic roles, emphasizing practical solutions for vulnerable populations.
Dr. Poteat’s work has been featured in Gillings School publications, including studies on microeconomic interventions for transgender women’s HIV vulnerability and analyses of HIV trends among women in the U.S. She collaborates with community partners to design equitable health policies and practices.
