Dr. Hughto's research centers on health inequities among sexual and gender minority populations, people who use drugs, and those living with HIV. Her work integrates mixed-methods approaches to examine structural drivers of stigma and develop bio-behavioral interventions. Key areas include overdose prevention, HIV/STI prevention, substance use treatment, and health policy analysis with emphasis on transgender health equity. She employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to address intersectional discrimination and healthcare access barriers.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent focus on transgender health disparities, opioid use disorder interventions, and structural determinants of health. Recent work analyzes Medicare/Medicaid policy impacts on transgender beneficiaries, fentanyl-adulterated stimulant supply chains, and gender-affirming care outcomes. As Co-Senior Editor of Social Science and Medicine's Social Epidemiology Office, she shapes discourse in structural health inequities research.
Dr. Hughto serves as Co-Lead of the Community Engagement and Outreach Core for Advance RI-CTR (U54GM115677) and as Scientific Advisor for the Translational and Transformative Research Core of the COBRE on Opioids and Overdose. Her federally-funded research portfolio includes principal investigator roles on multiple NIH grants addressing substance use and HIV prevention. She has testified as an expert witness in state and federal courts to advance civil rights protections for marginalized populations.
Her work extends through collaborative networks across Brown University departments including Epidemiology, Medicine, and Health Services, Policy and Practice. She co-leads the POINTS study investigating stimulant-involved overdose prevention and maintains active partnerships with Fenway Health for community-engaged research with LGBTQ+ populations.
