Tonia Passwater, Ph.D., serves as a Practitioner in Residence in the Department of Music, Theater, and Dance at the University of New Haven's College of Arts and Sciences. Prior to joining the University of New Haven, she taught music history and theory courses at William Paterson University, Hamilton College, and Lehman College.
Dr. Passwater holds the following academic qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Musicology from the CUNY Graduate Center
- M.M. in Clarinet Performance from Brooklyn College
- B.M. in Music Performance from Jacksonville University
Her research focuses on a diverse range of topics in musicology, with particular emphasis on American music and gender studies. Her primary areas of interest include:
- American popular music
- American women musicians and composers
- Reception history
- Musical modernism
- Intersections of gender and social class in American musics and identities
- Portrayals of music and musicians in literary works
She is dedicated to creating a culturally responsive curriculum that highlights underrepresented musicians in the standard histories of American and Western musics, and she integrates music history, theory, and performance to develop well-rounded musicians.
