Michael Walsh is an Associate Professor of Clarinet and Music History at South Dakota State University (SDSU), where he also directs the 'Windy Jacks' Clarinet Ensemble. He holds positions in the School of Performing Arts and teaches courses in clarinet performance, music history, and music appreciation. His professional roles include serving as President of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors (NACWPI) from 2014 and chair of the Brookings Chamber Music Society Program Coordinator and Campus Planning and Sustainability Committee at SDSU.
Walsh earned a D.M.A. in Clarinet Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Kansas (2008), a M.M. from the University of Miami (2000), and a B.M. with a minor in Music Business from the University of Miami (1998). His academic interests focus on clarinet performance, new music advocacy, and musicology.
He has performed with prestigious ensembles such as the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, South Dakota Symphony, and Dakota Wind Quintet, and has premiered works like David Morgan’s 'Reflections and Meditations.' Walsh is an active performer at music festivals (e.g., Aspen Music Festival, Tanglewood Institute) and has given masterclasses at institutions including Juilliard and University of Memphis. His professional memberships include the International Clarinet Association, Music Teachers National Association, and NACWPI.
