Tonia Gruppen is an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at Hope College, where she has worked since fall 2005. She serves as the Clinical Education Coordinator for the athletic training education program and acts as a clinical athletic trainer for over 20 collegiate sports teams at the institution.

Her research focuses on clinical applications in athletic training, particularly the use of manual therapy and myofascial release techniques for injury rehabilitation. The 2012 publication "Removal Time and Efficacy of Riddell Quick Release Face Guard Attachment System Side Clips During 1 Football Season" highlights her work in sports safety and emergency management protocols.
She has received the Great Lakes Public Relations Award (2009–2011) for her contributions to the field. Outside academia, she balances her time with family activities, including supporting her daughters' sporting events, and enjoys reading, jogging, and playing slow pitch softball.
