Tonia Carless is an Associate Professor in Architecture at the Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå University (currently on leave). Her work focuses on spatial politics, urban inequalities, public space production, and sustainability. She holds a practice-based PhD exploring architectural drawing's relationship with urban space.
Previously, she served as Programme Leader for Interior Architecture at the University of the West of England Bristol and Oxford Brookes School of Architecture (UK). She is currently an External Examiner for Birmingham City University's School of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Design courses.
Research interests include architectural drawing as research, transdisciplinary visual methods, and the social production of space. Ongoing projects include the collaborative 'Mediated University' book project analyzing academic space. Her work spans architecture film-making, urban transformation studies, and the cultural significance of building relocation practices in northern Sweden.
Teaching responsibilities include Theory of Architecture modules for years 1–3, emphasizing critical spatial discourse and design theory.
Key contributions include studies on building mobility (e.g., house relocation in Umeå), performative visual research methods, and critiques of UK university urban spaces. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges architecture, urban studies, and cultural theory.
