Katrin Holmqvist-Sten is an Associate Professor in the History of Architecture at the Umeå School of Architecture (Umeå University). She serves as Director of Studies and Assistant Head of Department, overseeing pedagogical leadership and administrative coordination. Her research focuses on spatial infrastructure of culture, particularly the role of kulturhus (cultural houses) since the 1950s and architectural marketing strategies for institutions.
Holmqvist-Sten holds a PhD from 2001 exploring how architecture functioned as a marketing tool for universities like Campus Sundsvall. She has led educational reforms at Umeå School of Architecture and served as Head of Department at Umeå Academy of Fine Arts (2017-2021). Her academic background combines art theory with architectural history.
Her teaching portfolio includes courses on architectural history and theory, with recent pedagogical workshops on sustainable development education. She collaborates with regional projects like Umeå Urban Forum and CERUM’s Culture and Cities initiative.
