Emma Vikström is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, Umeå University, Sweden. Her research examines historical educational contexts through the lens of inclusion and exclusion dynamics, with specific focus on Swedish academic history.
Her primary research investigates the intersection of race biology and gender in early 20th-century Swedish educational debates, particularly regarding women's exclusion from higher education. She has extensively analyzed eugenics in Ellen Key's (1849-1926) pedagogical works, as demonstrated in her doctoral thesis The Creation of the New Human, which explores how eugenic principles were integrated into Key's educational philosophy for 'improving' humanity.
Vikström's publications reveal consistent thematic focus on Scandinavian educational history, gender studies, and the legacy of Ellen Key across European contexts. Her work appears in specialized Nordic journals like NORA: Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research and Nordic Journal of Educational History, demonstrating methodological rigor in historical analysis of educational policy and social exclusion.
She actively contributes to the "History and education" research group at Umeå University, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration on historical dimensions of educational systems, while also serving as co-editor for the journal Utbildning & Demokrati – tidskrift för didaktik och utbildningspolitik (Education & Democracy – Journal for Didactics and Educational Policy).
