Tong Jiang is a Professor and Executive Director of the Research Institute of Climatic and Environmental Governance of Jiangsu Province at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology since 2022. Previously, he served as Dean of the School of Geographical Science and Director of the Institute of Disaster Risk Management (2018–2022), and as Chief Scientist at the National Climate Centre, China Meteorological Administration (2008–2018). His career spans over three decades, including leadership roles at the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology (1987–2008).
- Education: B.Sc. in Geography from Peking University (1980–1984), M.Sc. from Lanzhou Institute of Glaciology & Geocryology (1984–1987), and Ph.D. in Germany (1994–1999).
His research focuses on climate risk management, weather extremes, and climate-water-health nexus. He pioneered impact-based early warning systems for floods/droughts and socio-economic-climate projections.
He has received multiple national and provincial awards, including First Prize of the Ministry of Water Resources (2020) and Jiangsu Provincial Government (2021).
As a prolific mentor, he supervised over 40 M.Sc. and 20 Ph.D. students. His funded projects include collaborations with DFG, NSFC, and Met Office, addressing water scarcity, monsoon precipitation, and climate adaptation.
