Professor Tong-Earn Tay is a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Faculty of Engineering, where he leads a research group focused on multi-scale computational modeling of composite material damage, failure, and impact mechanics.
Education:
- PhD, University of Melbourne
- Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honors) in Mechanical Engineering, University of Melbourne
Research Interests: His work specializes in multi-fidelity computational frameworks for predicting progressive damage, delamination, and fracture in composite structures. Key methodologies include multi-scale modeling techniques bridging micro-mechanical behavior to macroscopic structural responses, with applications in aerospace and automotive industries.
Scientific Awards:
- JEC Asia Life Achievement Award
Advising and Research Funding:
Professor Tay has graduated 19 PhD students and mentored 21 postdoctoral researchers and 10 research engineers. His extensive grant portfolio includes:
- Government Agencies: Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR), Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA), Economic Development Board (EDB), Ministry of Education, Marine & Port Authority (MPA), US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR)
- Industry Partners: Airbus, Boeing, Rolls-Royce, Vestas, Haliburton, DSM, Maruhachi
Research Leadership: He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Reinforced Plastics & Composites and on editorial boards of five major journals including Journal of Composite Materials and International Journal of Damage Mechanics, while maintaining active industry collaborations for applied composite research.
