Dr. Tomoko Okuno is Lecturer IV and Head of the Japanese Program at the University of Michigan. She holds a PhD in Second Language Studies from Michigan State University and teaches First-, Second-, and Third-Year Intensive Japanese courses.
Her research investigates second language acquisition processes, particularly L2 phonology and pedagogical approaches to Japanese instruction. Current projects focus on measuring and assessing oral fluency and pronunciation, along with developing pre-writing strategies to enhance student composition skills.
Okuno facilitates innovative teaching methods including video conferences connecting Japanese learners with English students in Japan. Her work explores socio-affective dimensions of language learning and the impact of short-term study abroad experiences on language development.
