Dr. Tom Nichols is a Reader in History of Art at the University of Glasgow, part of the School of Culture and Creative. His research focuses on Venetian Renaissance art, particularly the works of Tintoretto, Titian, Giorgione, and Jacopo Bassano, with a specialization in imagery of the poor, sick, and peasants in European art from 1300 to 1850. Nichols earned his PhD from the University of East Anglia in 1992 and held positions at the University of Aberdeen before joining Glasgow in 2013. He has held prestigious fellowships, including the Paul Mellon Visiting Senior Research Fellowship at the National Gallery of Art in Washington (2016), and contributed to documentaries like the Sky Arts film on Tintoretto (2019).
Education: B.A. in English Literature and Art History (University of York), M.A. (Courtauld Institute of Art), PhD (University of East Anglia).
Research Interests: Co-editing a volume on Tintoretto (2021), leading a project on peasants in European art, and authoring books like Titian and the End of the Venetian Renaissance (2013), Renaissance Art in Venice (2016), and Giorgione’s Ambiguity (2020). His work explores the intersection of art, social marginalization, and cultural identity.
Publications and Awards: Over 69 publications, including articles in Artibus et Historiae and Burlington Magazine. Awards include grants from the Carnegie Trust and British Academy. His research bridges art history with social and economic contexts.
Teaching: Offers courses on Renaissance art, including Art, Tradition, and Identity in Venice 1350-1797 and postgraduate studies on Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese.
