Dr. Cleo Nisse is an Assistant Professor of Early Modern European Art at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and the Research Centre Arts in Society (AiS). She holds a BA from the University of Cambridge, conservation training from the Courtauld Institute, and MPhil/PhD degrees from Columbia University. Previously, she held a three-year Paul Mellon Fellowship at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
Her research focuses on early modern art in southern Europe, particularly Venice, emphasizing technical art history, art-ecology intersections, and material practices. Current projects include Venetian Canvas, exploring painting techniques' historical and interpretive significance.
Recent publications (2024) address color theory in Renaissance Italy, Titian scholarship, and Venetian women artists. Her work combines material analysis with cultural interpretation, as seen in reviews of technical art history texts and editorial contributions to Titian studies. She contributes to interdisciplinary dialogues on art conservation and gender in art production.
Her office is located at room 213, Oude Boteringestraat 34, Groningen, where she advises students and pursues research collaborations.
