Tom Elder is a Senior Lecturer at American University, specializing in Graphic Design. He holds an MFA in Graphic Design from Iowa State University and has a career spanning traditional graphic design, hand-drawn typography, custom signage, and 3D digital art. His expertise includes accessibility design under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADASAD), ethical AI applications in UX, and Indigenous advocacy through the #NotYourMascot movement.
Notable projects include serving as the lead designer for Idaho's first inclusive accessible playground (Adventure Island Playground) and creating signage for institutions like the City Centre Garage in Boise, Idaho. His perspective piece on typographic design choices, "Which is Worse: Comic Sans or Papyrus?", was featured in American Magazine.
As a voting member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and a person raised on Indigenous Reservation land, Elder integrates cultural experiences into teaching principles of racism, Indigenous rights, and inclusive design.
