Addington's research focuses on violent crime measurement, victimization patterns, and the utilization of U.S. crime statistics, with recent emphasis on older adults, aging in place, and safety concerns. Her work spans school violence, campus victimization, fear of crime, and the long-term effects of events like Columbine. She has made significant contributions to understanding intimate partner violence, particularly among LGB individuals and older women.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a methodological strength in using national crime datasets (NCVS, NIBRS) to examine victimization patterns across different demographic groups. Her work increasingly incorporates intersectional approaches, examining how race, gender, and age intersect in victimization experiences and responses.
Scientific Awards:
- AU's top faculty research award (2016)
Addington has secured substantial research funding as Principal Investigator from the National Institute of Justice, American Educational Research Association, American Statistical Association, and Bureau of Justice Statistics. Her current work includes a $195,135 project on intimate partner violence against older women (2022-2024). She previously served as editor-in-chief of Homicide Studies and regularly consults for the Census Bureau and U.S. Department of Education on federal crime surveys. Addington is also active in policy engagement, having participated in congressional panels and contributed to the Age Friendly DC Task Force.
