Toivo Maimets

Toivo Maimets is a Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Tartu (Estonia) since 1992. He has held significant leadership roles including Director of the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (2008–Present), Director of the National Centre of Excellence for Gene and Environmental Technologies (2001–2007), and Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Geography (1993–1995). His international experience includes a Visiting Professorship at the University of Newcastle (United Kingdom, 2006–2007) and post-doctoral/research work at the Marie Curie Cancer Research Institute (UK, 1985–1989).

• Educational background: Ph.D. in molecular biology (University of Tartu, 1991), kandidat nauk in molecular biology (Moscow University, 1984), and diploma in genetics/cytology (University of Tartu, 1980).

His research focuses on cell biology and cancer stem cells, with specific interests in intracellular signal transduction pathways regulating cell cycle, DNA damage response, tumorigenesis, and molecular mechanisms governing cell developmental potency. He also contributes to bioethics and miRNA-based therapeutic approaches.

Scientific contributions are recognized through memberships in prestigious boards and councils, including the European Molecular Biology Conference presidency (2010), ERIAB, Academia Europea, and advisory roles in European Commission and Estonian institutions.
