Todd Alexander

Todd Alexander is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, practicing as a Pediatric Nephrologist at the Stollery Children's Hospital. He serves as Associate Director of the Women and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI) and holds the Canada Research Chair in epithelial transport physiology.

His research centers on Pediatric Nephrology with specific focus on renal tubular transport disorders including kidney stone formation, calcium and phosphate homeostasis, and paracellular transport mechanisms. He investigates molecular pathways underlying pediatric kidney diseases, particularly how epithelial transport physiology abnormalities contribute to conditions like hypercalciuria and hypocalcemia, bridging clinical practice with laboratory research to develop targeted interventions.

Analysis of his recent publications reveals dominant themes in renal calcium/phosphate handling, claudin-mediated paracellular transport, and genetic underpinnings of mineral metabolism disorders. His work demonstrates consistent exploration of calcium-sensing receptor signaling, vitamin D metabolism, and tight junction proteins across diverse experimental models, with strong translational emphasis on improving pediatric kidney disease outcomes.
