معرفی
Rajesh Thakker serves as May Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford within the Medical Sciences Division and Nuffield Department of Medicine, where he leads the Academic Endocrine Unit as a Consultant Physician. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of endocrine disorders affecting calcium and phosphate homeostasis, including endocrine neoplasia, renal tubular defects, and bone diseases.
His primary research interests encompass endocrinology and metabolic disorders, with specialized focus on calcium/phosphate regulation, parathyroid pathophysiology, endocrine tumor development, renal calcium handling, and bone metabolism disorders including osteoporosis and rickets. His work integrates molecular genetics, cellular physiology, and clinical analysis to elucidate disease mechanisms.
Recent publication trends demonstrate expanding research into molecular genetics of calcium disorders, novel therapeutic approaches like calcilytics for hypocalcemia, climate change impacts on endocrine function, and genetic underpinnings of bone fragility. His work consistently bridges basic science discoveries with clinical applications for disorders like hypoparathyroidism and familial hypercalcemia.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Louis V. Avioli Founder’s Award (ASBMR, 2009)
- Parathyroid Medal (FIRMO, Italy, 2012)
- Jack W. Coburn Endowed Lectureship (ASN, 2012)
- International Research Prize (ASBMR, 2015)
- Dale Medal (Society for Endocrinology, UK, 2015)
- Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS, 2014)
Professor Thakker actively supervises DPhil students through available projects and leads a multidisciplinary research group that has investigated over 15 endocrine disorders. His team's identification of defective genes and functional pathways has been supported by substantial grant funding enabling translational research from bench to bedside.
The Academic Endocrine Unit operates as an integrated research team within the Nuffield Department of Medicine, combining basic scientists and clinicians to investigate molecular pathophysiology while maintaining strong clinical connections for patient-oriented research in endocrine disorders.
