Todd A. McDonald is Associate Chair and Associate Professor of Art, Painting at Clemson University's Department of Art, part of the College of Architecture, Art and Construction. He teaches painting, graduate seminars, and contributes to senior/graduate team teaching. His academic journey includes a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin and an MFA in Painting & Drawing from Arizona State University.
Research interests focus on painting and contemporary art practices, reflected in his active studio work exhibited nationally/internationally. Notable achievements include solo exhibitions at Oklahoma State University, Tennessee Tech University, and Redux Contemporary Art Center (reviewed by Brian Granger in Daily Serving). He was the first-place North American winner in the VKR75 International Painting Competition (Denmark).
Teaching spans Clemson since 2006 and prior roles at Miami University, Ohio. His artistic practice emphasizes oil-based works exploring abstract, figurative, and environmental themes, with recent pieces like Gut Biome (2023) and Grip (2022).
