Charles Goss is a Professor of the Practice at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) at Tufts University, where he has taught for over 30 years. His academic roles include leading courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, and interdisciplinary art practices. He holds an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1976) and a BFA from the University of Colorado Boulder (1971).
His research interests emphasize cross-disciplinary artistic exploration, spanning sculpture, installation, photography, book-making, and performance art. Goss advocates for skill-building paired with critical discourse, encouraging students to engage with personal content and intellectual curiosity. Notable works include five European solo exhibitions (Hull, Berlin, Amsterdam) and publications such as 90 Days In Paris and Everything I Don't Know series housed in SMFA's library.
During the pandemic, he developed the 'Small Works' series—abstract drawings and paintings that evolved into a standalone artistic focus. These pieces explore color, theme coherence, and creative ritualism, exhibited through platforms like the Small Works Gallery. His recent projects include a children's book in progress, expanding his narrative art into new audiences.
Goss's pedagogical approach emphasizes questioning, boundary-pushing, and visual expression through technical mastery. His studio practice integrates daily abstract exercises, fostering both personal creativity and collaborative dialogue with peers.
