Toby Buonagurio is a Professor in the Department of Art at Stony Brook University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. She has been the Head of Ceramics since 1976. Her M.A. was earned at the City College of New York.
Her research focuses on Ceramic Sculpture, Drawing, and Conceptual Drawing, with a signature style blending colorful, offbeat, and tongue-in-cheek elements inspired by international travel and popular culture. Notable works include 'Times Square Times: 35 Times' (2005) in NYC’s Times Square subway station and 'Earth, Air, Fire, Water' (2010), a ceramic butterfly installation at the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics.
Her work has been exhibited in 27 solo shows and over 300 international exhibitions, featured in major publications, and collected by institutions worldwide. She has conducted artist residencies, including at Japan’s Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park (1997).
Her recent work explores high-octane, reflective ceramic surfaces that dynamically engage viewers. She maintains an active public presence through installations, commissions, and educational outreach.
