Tobias Boos

Tobias Boos is a Senior Scientist at the University of Vienna's Institute of Political Science within the Faculty of Social Sciences. He serves as Deputy Head of the Latin America Research Network and a Visiting Researcher at King's College London. His roles include Principal Investigator for the BITELSA research project on Bitcoin's cultural political economy in El Salvador.

Boos holds a PhD (Dr. phil.) and BA in Political Science from the University of Vienna, with additional research experience at institutions like FLACSO (Quito), UCL, and Universidad Complutense Madrid. His education includes a Mag. in Development Studies and BA in Political Science.

Research focuses on international political economy, Latin American populism, social structure analysis, and state theories of the Global South. Recent work examines cryptocurrencies' socio-economic impacts in El Salvador and middle-class dynamics in Argentina. Regional specialization is on Latin America with a focus on political economy and social movements.

His publications span peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and public engagement pieces. Notable contributions include books on Argentine Kirchnerism and Latin American social structures. Awards include the 2019 Sowi-Doc Award for outstanding research.

Teaching includes leading 42 completed Bachelor theses and currently supervising 3 Master's projects. Courses cover international politics, political theory, and governance. He leads the Research Group Latin America and serves on editorial boards for Journal für Entwicklungspolitik and the DVPW Populism Working Group.
