Tobias Axelsson is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economic History at Lund University, with additional roles as Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Human Geography and member of the LU Profile Area: Human Rights. He teaches courses on the economic history of developing regions (focusing on Asia Pacific, China, and India) and development studies post-1945. As Director of Studies for the Bachelor in Development Studies, he oversees curricula and supervises students at bachelor and master levels.
His research centers on structural transformation processes in modern economic growth, particularly in Southeast Asia, emphasizing agricultural change and colonial economic dynamics. Key themes include resilience to economic shrinking, social capabilities, and comparative development trajectories (e.g., Indonesia, Brazil, Kenya, Tanzania). He has led projects such as 'The art of limiting economic shrinking' (2025–2028) and 'Farmers in Crisis' (2023–2026).
Recent publications analyze resilience strategies in emerging economies, colonial legacies, and policy frameworks for sustainable development. He actively participates in conferences, workshops, and media engagements to disseminate his findings. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to poverty reduction, inequality, and sustainable communities.
