Rolf Bauer is a Lecturer at the University of Vienna's Department of Economic and Social History since 2018. Previously, he served as a Research and Teaching Assistant (Praedoc) at the same department from 2013 to 2017. His research focuses on the Economic and Social History of Modern South Asia (18th–20th centuries), Agrarian Studies, Commodity Frontiers, and the socio-economic dynamics of drugs and famines in colonial contexts.
He is an active member of the Agrarian Studies Group and two research clusters at the University of Vienna: 'Global History' and 'Economy and Society.' Bauer's work bridges global and local perspectives, examining how agrarian systems, commodity networks, and colonial policies shaped South Asian societies. His monograph The Peasant Production of Opium in Nineteenth-Century India (2019) and co-edited volume Global Agricultural Workers (2023) are seminal contributions to these fields.
Bauer’s publications analyze themes like colonial economies, peasant agency, and the global integration of commodity chains. His recent work (2022–2023) explores disaster resilience in historical contexts and the transnational dimensions of agrarian labor systems. He maintains strong scholarly networks through collaborative projects and editorial contributions.
