Dr. Timothy R. Levine is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Communication at the University of Oklahoma's Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1992. His research spans deception, interpersonal communication, persuasion, experimental design, and statistical validity, with over 160 journal articles published. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and Department of Justice, and has received media coverage from New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, NBC, CNN, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic.
Research Focus: Dr. Levine's scholarly contributions center on Truth-Default Theory, deception detection, and communication research methodology. He has extensively studied how humans judge honesty, the role of theory in communication research, and challenges in meta-analysis. His 2020 book Duped: Truth-Default Theory and the Social Science of Lying and Deception synthesizes three decades of research on deception.
Teaching: In Spring 2024, he taught COMM 3443 – Deception. Office hours are available by appointment in Burton Hall. His publications demonstrate expertise in both theoretical and applied communication studies, with recent works addressing deception patterns across cultures and experimental design best practices.
