Timothy J Yeager serves as Professor of Finance and holds the Arkansas Bankers Association Chair in Banking at the University of Arkansas's Sam M. Walton College of Business. With over 15 years of experience at the institution since 2006, he has established himself as a leading expert in banking and financial regulation, particularly in community bank stress testing. Prior to his academic career, Yeager worked as an Economist and Assistant Vice President at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis from 1998 to 2005, bringing valuable practical experience to his research and teaching.
Yeager earned his PhD and MA in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis, complemented by a BS in Business Administration from St. Louis University. His educational background in both economics and business administration provides a strong foundation for his interdisciplinary research approach.
Professor Yeager's primary research interests focus on banking regulation, risk management, and stress testing methodologies for community banks. He has developed a widely recognized community bank stress testing framework that has been adopted by financial institutions across the United States. His work bridges academic research with practical applications, helping community banks assess their ability to withstand severe economic downturns. His research also extends to financial crises, market discipline mechanisms, bank transparency issues, and the impact of regulatory changes on banking institutions.
Yeager's most significant contribution is his Community Bank Stress Testing project, which provides freely available resources for U.S. community banks to build customized macro stress testing models. Updated regularly (most recently in March 2025 with 2024 banking data), this project includes comprehensive documentation and Excel-based tools that allow banks to generate stress tests specific to their financial data. His work aligns with federal supervisory guidance while providing accessible tools for smaller financial institutions.

Throughout his career, Professor Yeager has maintained strong connections between academia and the banking industry. His research directly addresses practical challenges facing community banks, particularly regarding regulatory compliance and risk management. His community bank stress testing resources have been instrumental in helping smaller financial institutions implement sophisticated risk assessment tools without requiring extensive resources. Yeager actively engages with banking professionals through presentations, workshops, and direct consultation.
Professor Yeager leads the Community Bank Stress Test initiative at the Department of Finance, which serves as a bridge between academic research and practical banking applications. This project has gained national recognition and is frequently referenced in regulatory discussions about appropriate stress testing methodologies for community banks.
