Timothy Hinton is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at North Carolina State University, where he has taught since 1996. He previously served as a visiting professor of philosophy at Cornell University (2003–2005). Hinton holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from MIT (1996), an MSt in Philosophy from the University of Oxford (1991), and prior degrees from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa.
His research focuses on political philosophy, ethics, philosophy of religion, and the history of philosophy. Notable contributions include work on status egalitarianism, self-ownership, and materialist approaches to historical analysis. He edited The Original Position (Cambridge University Press, 2015), a volume exploring John Rawls’s influential concept.
Hinton’s recent research explores materialist interpretations of history and Aristotelian naturalism. He has been honored as a member of the NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers (2008) and has received multiple research awards from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
His presentations include discussions on topics like practical rationality, distributive justice, and Schopenhauer’s moral foundations. He has also contributed to bioethics and research ethics education through campus institutes.
