Ladson Hinton

Ladson Hinton is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, Davis. His research focuses on the cultural aspects of geriatric mental health, particularly Alzheimer’s Disease, late-life depression, and disparities in mental health care access across diverse ethnic groups. He has conducted extensive ethnogeriatric work with Asian American (Chinese and Vietnamese), African American, Latino, and Euro-American populations. His studies examine mental health care delivery in primary care settings, caregiver interventions, and the sociocultural context of dementia-related symptoms.

Dr. Hinton co-led the Sacramento Area Latino Study on Aging, exploring cognitive decline and dementia in Mexican American populations. His current projects include a mixed-method study on barriers to depression care for ethnically diverse older men and community-based interventions for Asian American and Latino family caregivers. He also investigates adapting the DSM cultural formulation for cross-cultural psychiatric diagnosis in older adults.

His work emphasizes qualitative methods and community engagement, including public presentations on Alzheimer’s disease, caregiving, and geriatric depression. Dr. Hinton’s research bridges clinical practice, cultural competence, and health equity.
