He holds a PhD from the University of Luton (now Bedfordshire) and has held prior academic positions at Queen's University Belfast, University of Durham, and King's College London. His research focuses on British military history (1793–1992), the Ulster Volunteer Force (1910–22), and Ireland's role in the First World War. Bowman acted as an academic advisor for BBC Northern Ireland’s World War 1 at Home series (2014) and has authored/co-authored major publications such as The Disparity of Sacrifice (2020) and edited the Military Papers of Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck (2021). Current projects include a study on Irish militarism (1902–1916) and a long-term project on Irish soldiers in the British Army since 1680.
His teaching covers British military history since 1660, Ireland’s military history since 1689, and global perspectives on World War I. Publications span peer-reviewed articles, books, and edited volumes, highlighting themes like officer recruitment in WWI, counter-insurgency dynamics, and the socio-military context of Irish nationalism.
Bowman’s work bridges academic research and public history, leveraging archival materials and collaborative projects to contextualize military history within broader socio-political frameworks.
