Iain R Smith is a Senior Lecturer in History at Warwick University and holds an Emeritus Reader title. His career includes visiting roles at institutions such as the University of Cape Town, University of Pretoria, and Mansfield College, Oxford. He holds degrees from Edinburgh, Wisconsin (as a Fulbright Scholar), and Oxford (D.Phil.).
His research focuses on South African and British imperial history, with specialization in the 19th and 20th centuries. He has conducted extensive archival work in South Africa and Britain, particularly on the South African War (1899–1902). Recent work includes studies on Mafeking's siege and British concentration camps during the war.
Publications span books (e.g., The Origins of the South African War), journal articles, and edited volumes. His articles often analyze historiographical trends and military narratives. He contributed to the South African Historical Journal and History Today.
