Professor Richard Reid is a Professor of African History at the University of Oxford, affiliated with St Cross College. His research focuses on modern African history, particularly warfare, historical culture, and Africa-Europe relations during the long nineteenth century. He examines how violence and trauma shape historical narratives in regions like East and Northeast Africa, including Uganda, Ethiopia, and Eritrea.
His current research explores the Ethiopia-Eritrea War and perceptions of precolonial history in modern Africa. He teaches courses on global and imperial history, including modules on warfare in African history and the Scramble for Africa. Reid supervises DPhil students in topics related to African military history and violence.
Recent publications include The African Revolution (2025, forthcoming), Shallow Graves (2020), and authoritative texts on modern African and Ugandan history. He is part of the Oxford Centre for Global History, emphasizing transnational historical analysis.
