Dr. Timothy Bonenfant serves as Associate Professor of Clarinet and Saxophone at Angelo State University, where he directs the ASU Jazz Ensemble and teaches Survey of Rock and Roll. He is an active performer, member of The Mesquite Trio and The Batik Quartet, and a strong advocate for new music.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas
- Master's degree from the California Institute of the Arts
- DMA in Clarinet Performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (first awarded in this discipline)
Bonenfant's research and performance interests center on contemporary classical music, jazz, and the clarinet family, particularly the contrabass clarinet. He has premiered numerous new works and recorded albums dedicated to modern compositions, reflecting deep engagement with 20th/21st-century repertoire and extended techniques.
His scholarly work includes analysis of specialized repertoire, exemplified by his 2013 presentation on contrabass clarinet works at the International Clarinet Association festival, demonstrating expertise in niche performance practices.
Awards include winning the UNLV Concerto Competition in 2004 and featured performances at international clarinet festivals in Northridge (2011) and Assisi (2013).
As director of the ASU Jazz Ensemble and through ensemble leadership in The Mesquite Trio and Batik Quartet, he mentors students in performance while maintaining active professional collaborations with major orchestras and artists.
