James Abate serves as Lecturer in Music (Jazz Percussion) at Hamilton College, appointed to the faculty in 2025. Based in Schambach Center 210, he brings over 20 years of professional performance and teaching experience across multiple U.S. regions including New York, Nevada, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
His educational foundation includes a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from SUNY Potsdam. Performance highlights feature collaborations with Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack Show, Syracuse Stage, UNLV Jazz Ensemble, and Crane Percussion Ensemble.
Abate's professional focus centers on jazz percussion performance and pedagogy, with specialized expertise in ensemble direction and instrumental techniques. His teaching methodology integrates extensive stage experience with structured music education principles.
Current responsibilities include teaching instrumental music for Syracuse City Schools and providing private percussion instruction. Performance engagements span jazz ensembles, theatrical productions, and educational institutions including Crane Wind Ensemble and Eastman Trombone Ensemble.
