Andrew Heglund is an Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno's School of Music, where he teaches percussion and directs the UNR Percussion Ensemble. He also instructs jazz small groups and performs with multiple ensembles including the UNR faculty jazz quintet The Collective and the Reno Jazz Orchestra. His work spans performance, composition, and education, with recordings such as Blue Trapezoid (2019) and Bassoon Surrounded showcasing his versatility in percussion and collaborative projects.
Education: DA in Music (University of Northern Colorado), MM in Jazz Studies (University of North Texas), BM in Percussion Performance (University of Minnesota).
Research interests include contemporary percussion performance, jazz ensemble direction, and interdisciplinary collaborations between music and dance. He actively performs with groups like the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra and has premiered works such as George Crumb’s Xylophony. Heglund also organizes educational events like the Northern Nevada Day of Percussion.
Recordings span jazz quintets, orchestral works, and chamber music duos. His compositions have been choreographed by the Sierra Nevada Ballet. He is a sought-after clinician and adjudicator in Northern Nevada and California.
