Professor Timothy Barker is a faculty member at the University of Glasgow, holding the position of Professor of Media Technology and Aesthetics in the Department of Theatre, Film & Television Studies within the School of CCA. His research critically examines the aesthetics and infrastructures of digital technology, drawing on media archaeology, media theory, and the philosophy of technology. He is the author of two influential books: Time and the Digital (2012) and Against Transmission (2018), which explore intersections between time, technology, and contemporary culture.
His research interests include media philosophy, the ontology of digital media, and critical analyses of crisis in technological contexts. He has held prestigious grants such as the Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2015–2016) and the British Academy/Leverhulme Small Grant (2013). He supervises research students in areas like digital animation, interactive cinema, and game studies, including projects such as Game On, Africa! and Non-Visual Animation.
Barker teaches courses such as Film and Television Technology, Animation, and Research Methods. His work bridges art, science, and technology, with exhibitions exploring interactive narratives and mixed reality. Key publications span journals like Theory, Culture & Society and Media Theory, focusing on topics like Michel Serres’ philosophy, digital aesthetics, and the temporal dimensions of media.
