Ivan Girina is a Senior Lecturer in Games Studies at Brunel University's College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences within the Digital Arts department. He holds a PhD in Film and Television Studies from the University of Warwick and an MA in Modern Languages and Media from the University of Cagliari, Italy. Girina co-founded and serves on the editorial board of the academic journal G|A|M|E – Games as Art, Media and Entertainment.
His research focuses on digital games aesthetics, particularly their relationship with cinema and visual media. Key areas include cinematic games, video game agency, film and new media, media literacy, queer theory in gaming, and political ideologies in digital games. Girina explores intersections between posthumanism and interactive narrative in works like Lies of P and the ethical implications of representation in titles such as Metal Gear Solid V.
Scientific awards include Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Teaching modules include:
