Tim Pitman is a Senior Research Fellow at Curtin University, specializing in higher education policy with a focus on disadvantaged student representation. He has worked in the Australian higher education sector since 1996 and earned his PhD in Education from The University of Western Australia in 2012.
- PhD in Education (University of Western Australia, 2012)
- Senior Research Fellow (Curtin University, ongoing since 2012)
- Research focus on education policy, equity in higher education, and alternative admissions pathways
His research examines how to increase opportunities for underrepresented groups in higher education through policy reform. He has written extensively about the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) system, arguing that while it serves as an efficient selection mechanism, it fails to fully capture student potential and should be complemented by alternative pathways.
He has contributed to public discourse through articles addressing special consideration programs, alternative admissions tests, enabling programs, and portfolio entry systems, funded by the National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education. His work consistently emphasizes the importance of flexible admissions criteria to ensure equitable access to tertiary education.
