Tim Fish is a Lecturer at Monash University's School of Curriculum Teaching & Inclusive Education. He coordinates the Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DOTS) undergraduate pathway course and teaches core first year teaching and learning units. His work focuses on educational pathways for underrepresented student populations, particularly those from non-traditional backgrounds.
Tim's research centers on pathways to higher education for underrepresented groups and non-ATAR students, rural placements, and alternative education programs. He employs critical ethnographic methods to examine how educational institutions respond to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, with particular attention to rural contexts. His work explores the therapeutic approaches used in alternative education settings and investigates how these programs can better serve disengaged youth while addressing systemic barriers to educational engagement.
Analysis of Tim Fish's publications from 2013-2025 reveals a consistent trajectory focusing on educational equity, with increasing emphasis on rural contexts in his more recent work. His research spans multiple dimensions of educational access, from teacher education selection processes to alternative pathways for early school leavers. The publications demonstrate methodological consistency through critical ethnography while expanding in scope to address both student and teacher experiences in rural educational settings.
Tim is actively accepting PhD students with supervision interests aligned to his research expertise: pathways and transition to higher education for students from underrepresented schools, TAFE, and other nontraditional pathways; experiences of rural students in tertiary institutions; and rural placement experiences of pre-service teachers. His teaching experience includes sociology of education and school and community partnerships, reflecting his commitment to understanding the broader social contexts of education.
